Where’s the buzz in Murcia?
It is not entirely fair to say that a place is “dead” because of a lack of atmosphere. Before judging, you should first ask yourself whether you have looked properly. All cities have their corner where something is happening. The fact is that Murcia, fortunately, is a very lively city; there are always people in the streets, here and there (except when it rains, which is rarely). Even so, people walk calmly, free from the stress of big metropolises, something you appreciate in daily life.
However, that’s not enough. In the end we want more; it isn’t enough just to see families strolling down the street. So I ask again: where is the party, the action? To answer that, we need to know two basic places. The first of them is perhaps more for a student vibe or young people who have just finished their degree. That first place is known as las tascas. Basically, it’s a network of streets around the Faculty of Law that also includes the Plaza de la Merced. With a picturesque, rustic and unashamed style, las tascas are a place to spend a peaceful and pleasant evening. Good atmosphere, very friendly staff and an ideal spot to meet new people. As always, we recommend these outings in moderation, but to clear your head at the weekend they are an ideal setting. In my opinion, the best place to meet is around the Garrampón and the Birrería; I think it might be where you will feel most comfortable as someone coming from outside.
On the other hand, if you are over twenty‑five or have a partner, my recommendation is the atmosphere of the Plaza de las Flores. It maintains the same laid‑back vibe as las tascas, but in a more refined, stylish area with a calmer crowd.
The most important thing is to know what you want from each night out and choose the right place, always, of course, seeking the advice of a local friend. But broadly speaking, these are perhaps the best choices depending on the kind of plan and atmosphere you are looking for.
